College Football Week 6 Power Rankings
A week after my Top 25 power rankings were shuffled like a confused offense before the snap, stability has finally found its way into my ratings. For the first time this season, the top nine teams in from last week’s rankings have remained intact.
That’s what happens after a mostly predictable weekend of college football in which only one top 10 team (South Florida) suffered an upset.
But that trend will not continue this week. Not with the gripping schedule we get to hype and enjoy this week.…

College Football Week 5 Power Rankings
Before offering up last week’s power rankings, I warned of potential “trouble brewing on the BCS horizon.” I claimed that even though it was early, the BCS could be facing a nightmare scenario with USC and the winners from the SEC and the Big 12 all finishing the season unbeaten.
Boy, was that a bunch of crazy talk or what?
When the weekend of upsets finally bled into this week of recovery, the damage was felt throughout my rankings: Nine of my top 25 lost, four of my top 10 fell, and six teams overall lost to unranked opponents. Ouch.…

College Football Week 4 Power Rankings
Is there trouble brewing on the BCS horizon?
I know, I know...it’s early. Last season taught us that, in this day of overarching parity, it’s unwise to look beyond college football’s immediate future.
But let’s do it anyway.
On the strength of it’s domination of Ohio State, USC is unchallenged atop the polls. But the SEC and Big 12 are fighting it out for the unofficial title of “Best Conference in the Land.”
Could also be an early warning sign that trouble lies ahead for the BCS.…

College Football Week 3 Power Rankings
So...remember how I said Ohio State would bounce back from last January’s national title game debacle and silence all their doubters? Just kidding!
But seriously, the Buckeyes were simply outclassed in every facet of the game. They looked slow, disorganized, slow, scared, and did I mention slow?
Of course, that’s just how they looked. It doesn’t mean that’s who they are. Maybe USC is just that much better than everyone else.
The blistering of the Buckeyes proves that USC is the class of college football—for now anyway. Now comes the hard part for the Trojans...staying on their game and sidestepping pitfalls against the likes of Stanford and UCLA and Oregon State—inexplicable losses that cost them a spot in the national title game the last two years.
Obviously, USC has vaulted to the top of the college football world. See where everyone else falls into play in this week’s power rankings:…

From Good to Great
Pete Sampras would always say that if he could win at least one Grand Slam a year, it’s a good year. Roger Federer secured his one Grand Slam this year with yesterday’s straight-set thumping of Andy Murray in the U.S. Open final.
By Federer’s lofty standards, one Grand Slam normally doesn’t translate into a good year. Not from a guy who won at least two Slams in each of the last four years and won three Slams in three of those years.
But 2008 wasn’t just a “good year” for Roger Federer; it was a great year.…

College Football Week 2 Power Rankings
Despite changes atop the national polls, the top six teams in my rankings remain the same after Week 2. I’ll let Ohio State and USC battle it out on the field before I vault the Trojans to the top of my ratings. That road win over Virginia was nice and all, but it’s not enough for USC to unseat my preseason No. 1.
However, there was a big change in Week 2. Skip Holtz’s Pirates appear in my rankings for the first time ever. But to make room for East Carolina, a team that won this week drops out. Such is life in the weekly college football power rankings:…
